The Penguins plan blockbuster trade before time runs out!

Can they pull this off??

In the blink of an eye on Tuesday, the floodgates opened and many major trades were pulled, involving teams like the Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers and New York Rangers.

The Pittsburgh Penguins were left out, but they did put Brock McGinn and Mark Friedman on waivers… And a big move might not be for fast away in the near future. In the past week, the Penguins have cleared as much as $5.5 million by waiving third-line players and are set up for the big one it seems.

There is also a sense that talks might have reignited between the Penguins and Vancouver Canucks, who could look to move forwards Brock Boeser or even JT Miller, despite his recent injury. The Penguins were also previously linked to Canucks’ goalie Thatcher Demko, and you have to wonder if that is one way to interpret Pittsburgh’s pending blockbuster.

Penguins GM Ron Hextall is also rumoured to be very interested by Arizona Coyotes defenseman Jakob Chychrun and could look at making a deal come true. With Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang getting older, the window may not be open for much longer for Pittsburgh and it could mean the Penguins will go all out.

Chychrun makes sense seeing that the Penguins’ defense is allowing 3.20 goals-per-game, which ranks in the bottom half of the NHL. The Coyotes’ blue liner could be exactly what the doctor ordered in Pittsburgh though the asking price remains high.

Prior to Wednesday night’s action, the Penguins are clinging to a playoff spot. They lead Buffalo by three points, and the Sabres have only one game in hand. The Penstrail the New York Islanders by one point for the top wild card but have four games in hand.

The time is now for a blockbuster in Pittsburgh.
