The NHL trade deadline may be over, but one near-blockbuster continues to send shockwaves across the league and it involves a name few expected to be in play.

According to insider Nick Kypreos, the Toronto Maple Leafs quietly floated the idea of moving Matthew Knies late in the process, catching multiple teams completely off guard.

“A big issue… was how late the possibility was raised,” Kypreos revealed, noting that teams like Montreal and Chicago simply weren’t prepared to pull off a deal of that magnitude on such short notice.

That timing may have killed what could have been one of the biggest trades of the season.

The Montreal Canadiens, in particular, appear to have been heavily involved. General manager Kent Hughes spoke to reporters nearly 45 minutes late after the deadline, visibly frustrated, admitting he had been working on a major deal that ultimately fell apart due to time constraints. He also hinted that talks could resume in the offseason.

Since then, speculation has only intensified, with Knies emerging as a central figure in the discussions.

At just 23 years old, Knies has quickly become one of Toronto’s biggest trade baits. With 23 goals and 64 points in 74 games, he’s proving to be a key piece despite the Leafs’ struggles. Add in his size, upside, and long-term contract at $7.75 million annually, and it’s easy to see why interest would be sky-high. But that also means the price would have been massive: likely involving top prospects and premium draft picks.

If this deal was truly as close as it sounds, don’t expect the noise to die down anytime soon. This might not be over.
