On Tuesday night, the Carolina Hurricanes battled their way to a 5–3 win over the Vegas Golden Knights, evening the Stanley Cup Final at two games apiece.

But the biggest talking point wasn’t the score and instead it was the absence of veteran goaltender Frederik Andersen.

Brandon Bussi got the start in his place and stopped 18 shots, helping Carolina secure a crucial victory. Behind him, Pyotr Kochetkov served as the backup while Andersen did not dress for the game and only served as the emergency netminder.

After the win, Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour addressed the decision, keeping things straightforward when speaking to reporters.

“Let him rest,” Brind’Amour said. “Give him as many days here as we can.”

The head coach however added that he’s not making any immediate decisions on his Game 5 starter in Carolina on Thursday.

The team has not indicated any injury, and the official explanation remains a rest decision as the series intensity continues to rise.

However, online discussion quickly filled the gap left by the lack of detail. Some fans speculated about whether Andersen was dealing with something beyond physical fatigue, pointing to recent personal challenges that have circulated in hockey circles. Some suggested Andersen has been struggling ever since his agent, and friends for close to two decades, Claude Lemieux passed away earlier this month.

None of those claims have been confirmed by the team or Andersen’s camp.

For now, Carolina maintains that the move was simply about managing workload in a demanding series and preserving their veteran netminder for what could be a decisive stretch of hockey.

But with the Stanley Cup Final hanging in the balance, every absence inevitably becomes a storyline of its own.
