Two key factors appear to have triggered the shocking trade demand.
A stunning new development out of Detroit sent shockwaves through the NHL. On Thursday, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman dropped the bomb that Dylan Larkin has officially requested a trade from the Red Wings after more than a decade with the organization.
Larkin, who has served as captain since 2021, has long been viewed as the emotional core and franchise cornerstone of Detroit’s rebuild. But Friedman reports that the relationship between the captain and management has deteriorated to the point where a split now appears to be on the table.
While Friedman noted that the full reasoning can only be speculated on, he pointed to two major contributing factors: Detroit’s continued inability to reach the playoffs, and what has been described as a strained relationship with key members of the organization’s hockey operations leadership.
That sentiment was echoed by ESPN’s Emily Kaplan, who reported that tensions between Larkin and Detroit management have been building for some time, dating back to contract negotiations in 2023 that reportedly left both sides frustrated.
That frustration became public at the end of Detroit’s 2024-25 season after the club narrowly missed the playoffs. Larkin didn’t hide his disappointment with management’s decision to stand pat at the trade deadline, suggesting the lack of additions had a noticeable impact on the dressing room.
“It was hard that we didn’t do anything, and then I felt the group kind of, we didn’t gain any momentum from the trade deadline and guys were kind of down about it. It’d be nice to add something and bring a little bit of a spark on the ice, and maybe a morale boost as well.”
For years, Larkin has been the face of the Red Wings’ most difficult era. Drafted 15th overall in 2014, the Waterford, Michigan native quickly became one of the team’s most important players, debuting in 2015–16 with a 23-goal rookie season and helping Detroit reach the playoffs.
Since then, however, the organization has struggled to return to contention, with Larkin often carrying the burden of leadership through a prolonged rebuild.
But he wants to reach the postseason and the truth is that Larkin has played more games in the Winter Olympics (6) than he has in the Stanley Cup playoffs (5) through 11 seasons in the NHL.
Despite that, he has remained one of the NHL’s most respected two-way centers and eventually succeeded Henrik Zetterberg as captain, becoming just the 37th in franchise history.
Now, that long-standing loyalty appears to be reaching its breaking point and if the trade request is finalized, it would mark one of the most significant departures in modern Red Wings history.
As for potential landing spots, David Pagnotta has identified several teams that would have interest, including the Vegas Golden Knights, Los Angeles Kings, Montreal Canadiens, Minnesota Wild, and Philadelphia Flyers.
Can you even imagine Larkin in one of these jerseys?
