The Detroit Red Wings have finally, mercifully retired Sergei Fedorov's iconic #91 to the rafters.

The Russian superstar is one of the best players in franchise history and one of the greatest Russian-born players to ever play in the NHL but it looked like for a decade and a half that his greatness would never be recognized in Detroit.

Fedorov, who help the Red Wings capture three Stanley Cups in his 13 years with the team, left the team in poor circumstances after some contract squabbles in the early 2000's. It's rumor that the Ilitch family, owners of the team, held this against Fedorov and vowed to never retire his number.

Now though... that's all water under the bridge.

FINALLY Fedorov's greatness has been recognized and his number 91 will hang in the rafters in Detroit forever.
