Interim-GM Shawn Horcoff with his first major move in Detroit.
It's been a turbulent stretch for the Detroit Red Wings, to say the least. After franchise icon Steve Yzerman stepped away from the general manager role this past summer, transitioning into a senior advisor position, the organization has been navigating uncharted waters under interim GM Shawn Horcoff. The on-ice results haven't been pretty either, with the club stumbling to a 1-3-2 record through their first six games of the 2026-27 campaign. But on Tuesday night, even as the team dropped another game in overtime to the New Jersey Devils, some very significant news was brewing behind the scenes.
The Red Wings and Alex DeBrincat have reached an agreement on a massive seven-year contract extension that carries a $13 million average annual value, totaling $91 million through the 2033-34 season. The deal represents the first major roster move under Horcoff's watch and sends a clear signal about where Detroit sees its future heading.
DeBrincat, a Farmington Hills, Michigan native, has been nothing short of electric since arriving in Detroit via a trade from the Ottawa Senators back in July 2023. That deal sent Dominik Kubalik, Donovan Sebrango, a 2024 first-round pick, and a 2024 fourth-rounder to Ottawa in exchange for the dynamic winger. Since then, DeBrincat has more than justified the cost of acquisition. Last season, the 28-year-old erupted for 41 goals and 44 assists across a full 82-game slate, firmly establishing himself as one of the premier goal scorers in the league.
He's carried that momentum into the new season as well, potting four goals and tallying eight points through the team's first six contests. On Tuesday night alone, he contributed two goals and an assist in the overtime loss to New Jersey, reminding everyone exactly why the Red Wings were so eager to get this extension done.
Originally a second-round selection by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2016 draft, DeBrincat is now in his 10th NHL season and has accumulated 298 goals and 603 points across 702 career games split between Chicago, Ottawa, and Detroit. He's a right-shot winger who has consistently been among the league's most dangerous finishers, and locking him down through his age-35 season gives the Red Wings a foundational piece to build around for the better part of a decade.
The timing of this extension is also worth noting. With the organization in a transitional phase following Yzerman's departure, getting a deal of this magnitude across the finish line shows that Horcoff and the front office aren't content to simply hold the fort. They're making proactive moves to shape the roster's long-term trajectory. Whether that earns Horcoff the permanent GM title remains to be seen, but this is about as strong a statement as you can make in the interim.
For a Red Wings team that has struggled out of the gate, having DeBrincat committed for the long haul provides some much-needed stability. The wins haven't come yet this season, but with a franchise-caliber goal scorer now locked in through 2034, Detroit at least knows one critical piece of the puzzle is firmly in place as they look to turn things around.
