Connor McDavid's injury is a serious one.
According to TSN's Bob McKenzie, McDavid will likely have surgery to repair a broken clavicle.
The Edmonton Oilers forward left Tuesday's win over the Philadelphia Flyers after crashing awkwardly into the end boards.
Head coach Todd McLellan said after the game that the No. 1 overall pick is expected to be out long term.
"He's disappointed. It's disappointing to get injured," McLellan said Tuesday. "It's his rookie year, things are going really well and he wants to be part of the group, which he still will be, just not in a uniform for a little while. I have a 19-year-old; I can't imagine how he would feel if he was in the NHL in his first year and got hurt."
“It was a hockey play. Three guys got tangled up in the corner. It’s unfortunate,” a dour McLellan told the media in his post-game address. “It’s an upper body injury that’s going to keep him out long-term. He’s dealing with the trainers and doctors right now. Peter [GM Chiarelli] will tell you more in the morning, but I can tell you it’s going to be long-term.”
General manager Peter Chiarelli addressed the media on Wednesday and confirmed the broken collarbone. Chiarelli referred to the injury as "tough".
The recovery time for an injury such as this varies, but it is expected that McDavid will be out for at least two months depending on what doctors must do to repair the broken bone.
By comparison, Patrick Kane was able to return from a similar injury in two months.
What a huge blow to the Oilers playoff hopes.
