The Wild Are Moving On from Mats Zuccarello

As the NHL free agency window approaches, one of the league's most consistent playmakers is about to become available. The Minnesota Wild and Mats Zuccarello are parting ways after a productive seven-year run together, with the veteran forward set to hit the open market on Wednesday.

A Decorated Run in Minnesota

Zuccarello, who will be 39 by the time the next training camp rolls around, leaves the Wild with an impressive resume. In his most recent campaign, he posted 54 points across 59 games, including 39 assists, putting him on pace for roughly 75 points over a full 82-game schedule. He also delivered in the postseason, tallying nine points in eight playoff contests during Minnesota's run. His previous season was equally strong, giving him back-to-back 58-point campaigns on a cap hit of $4.215 million.

Beyond the numbers, Zuccarello carved out a lasting legacy with the franchise. He became the fastest player in Wild history to reach 200 assists, accomplishing the feat in just 330 games, which was 70 games fewer than former captain Mikko Koivu needed to hit the same milestone. His chemistry with Kirill Kaprizov was a defining feature of Minnesota's offense, and his playmaking ability was widely credited as a key factor in the Russian star's development and success.

Wild general manager Bill Guerin had publicly expressed interest in bringing Zuccarello back, but the two sides could not find common ground. The sticking point reportedly centered on whether the veteran would accept a short-term deal with reduced guaranteed money or a contract built more heavily around bonuses.

A Career Built on Resilience and Skill

The Oslo native's NHL journey has been a remarkable one. One of only nine Norwegian-born players to ever compete in the league, Zuccarello first made his mark with the New York Rangers, where he spent nine seasons. He became the first Norwegian to appear in a Stanley Cup Final and gradually established himself as a reliable offensive contributor, signing his entry-level deal and then four consecutive one-year extensions before landing a four-year contract worth $4.5 million annually. During a five-season stretch from 2013-14 through 2017-18, he averaged 56 points per year, with a career-best 26 goals and 61 points coming in the 2015-16 season.

After a brief stint with the Dallas Stars following a trade in 2019, Zuccarello signed with Minnesota and never looked back. He spent seven seasons with the Wild across two contracts, the first of which carried a $6 million average annual value from 2019 through 2025.

Over the course of 963 career NHL games, the Norwegian winger has accumulated 744 points. His passing ability has been his calling card throughout, with five seasons of 40 or more assists, though he has eclipsed the 20-goal mark just three times in 16 professional seasons.

Whichever team signs Zuccarello will not need to commit significant term given his age, but they will need meaningful cap space to accommodate him. Beyond his on-ice production, his value as a veteran mentor for younger players could make him an attractive addition for teams looking to blend experience with emerging talent as the 2026-27 season approaches.
