This is a tough one to swallow for the Washington Capitals and their fanbase.

Capitals forward Tom Wilson underwent successful reconstructive knee surgery to repair a torn ACL, the team announced on Wednesday.

Wilson last played on May 3 in the Capitals’ first-round series against the Florida Panthers. He scored one goal before he was injured on a hit by Panthers defenseman MacKenzie Weegar.

It was a big blow for the Capitals, who were ousted in six games by Florida. Wilson plays in all situations, including the power play and penalty kill, and has become one of the team’s best defensive and physical forwards.

Now that Wilson is expected to miss six to eight months, this will be a tough start to the 2022-23 campaign without his services.

Wilson took part in 78 regular season games for the Capitals this season, recording a career-best in every scoring category: 24 goals, 28 assists for 52 points.

This is the worst news for him as he probably wanted to pick things up from there for 2022-23, but with the surgery and pending recovery, it will have to wait.
