Things go from bad to worse for longtime Bruins broadcaster Jack Edwards

It's time to pack it in, Jack.

When the Boston Bruins hit the ice for their 2023-24 preseason debut earlier this week, most fans were enthusiastic to hear Alex Faust calling the game for New England broadcaster NESN.

Faust temporarily replaced longtime Bruins broadcaster Jack Edwards who, quite frankly, has slipped in recent years. The quality of Edwards play by play has been a topic of debate for years now, but even the most die-hard Edwards fans have to now admit that the quality of his broadcasting is in steep decline.

Last night Edwards resumed his spot as the Bruins' main play by play man for NESN and it has a lot of Bruins fans calling for Faust to replace him permanently.

Honestly... something just doesn't sound right with Edwards.

Some fans have accused him of being drunk or stoned while calling the games, but I honestly wonder if he has some sort of medical condition or is rehabbing from some sort of brain injury. I swear I'm not trying to sound insensitive, but Edwards' labored delivery on some occasions makes it sounds as if he is recovering from a stroke. Frankly, he sounds drunk... which is sad in either case.

Check it out:

Again, I sincerely hope that everything is alright with Edwards and I say this as someone who hasn't been his biggest fan throughout the years. I've been critical of Edwards for his over the top "Bruins-homer" styled play calling for years now, but I would never wish ill-healthy or addiction on even my worst enemy. Everyone deserves dignity in this life and that includes people whose work that I don't necessarily like or respect.

Then again, maybe there's nothing wrong with Edwards at all and he's just... no longer good at his job. Edwards is 66 years old, after all. Sure, we've seen the likes of Bob Cole call the game well into his 70s and 80s, but not everyone out there is a legend like Cole. Maybe we just need to adjust our expectations for Edwards moving forward?
