A potential final showdown?

When the buzzer sounded after last night’s 2-1 victory for the Arizona Coyotes over the Los Angeles Kings, both Shane Doan and Jarome Iginla exited the ice in what was perhaps their final showdown. “I’m not sure. Who knows?” Iginla said of the possible final meeting. “We both have been very fortunate and blessed to play as long as we have. It’s pretty cool. “

The two veterans have had long, illustrious careers that have often times run parallel to each other. Of course, they started from a common point: the 1995 Memorial Cup winning Kamloops Blazers of the Western Hockey League. Since then they’ve both played over 1,500 NHL games each, but there’s no guarantee that they’ll return to the ice next season.

“We’ve played right around the same amount of games and same amount of time. It’s been fun, and I’m sure if you ask him, it’s gone quick. I don’t know what his plan is, and I don’t really know mine for sure, either,” said Iginla when asked to reflect on his career and how it compares with Doan’s.

Regardless of what happens in the future, both Iginla and Doan have had outstanding careers. Should Sunday’s contest be their final showdown, fans will always remember the players as leaders who did whatever it took to help their teams win.
