It was clearly implied that he was selfish..
Earlier this week, reports emerged that New Jersey Devils forward Jack Hughes wanted to get the puck from his overtime golden goal that clinched the Milan Cortina Olympic gold for Team USA in February, and found out that it would instead sit in the Hockey Hall of Fame, part of the Olympic display.
Hughes had pushed a lot to get the puck in his possession, hoping to offer it to his father, saying it was “bulls—t” he wasn’t allowed to keep it himself and noting he’d give it to his dad if he had the opportunity.
On Wednesday, Pittsburgh Penguins insider Josh Yohe of the Athletic went over to captain Sidney Crosby and asked him if he ever wanted his puck from his overtime golden goal that clinched the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. The Pens’ captain had an all-class answer that certainly put Hughes back in his place.
“I didn’t even think about it that way, to be honest with you,” Crosby said. “I was just happy that I scored the goal. I was happy that the puck was going to the Hall of Fame. I didn’t even think about it that way.”
Crosby managed the whole deal wtih pure class and made Hughes sound like an egocentric idiot.
This is probably why Hughes backed down from his initial stance while telling the same outlet he felt the reaction to his initial comment was overblown, saying:
“It’s like the most special place in hockey. I’m honored that it’s there, but obviously I think things were taken crazy. That’s the way I felt. I didn’t know where the puck was. It is what it is.”
In the end, the golden-goal puck remains behind glass in Toronto, a symbol of history owned by the institution, no matter what Hughes has to say about.
