On Thursday night, the NHL Situation Room ruled Connor McDavid offside and call off Edmonton Oilers’ overtime winner. The St. Louis Blues ended up winning 4-3 in a shootout.

After his team’s loss, McDavid voiced his frustration and called out the NHL officiating.

“Since I was a kid, I thought if you have possession of the puck (going over the blue line) that’s onside. If I had possession or not, I guess that’s the judgment call,” McDavid said.

“The league’s got to clarify some of these rules. What’s a kick? What’s offside? What’s goalie interference? It kind of depends on the night, I guess. It’s disappointing. Obviously, we should never have even let it get to that point.”

Later that night, the NHL situation room explained that “Edmonton’s McDavid preceded the puck into the offensive zone without possession and control and, therefore, was in an off-side position prior to Draisaitl’s goal.”

McDavid was not the only player to have called out the league in regards to officiating, though NHLers have been more polite than fans.

Fans have been ruthless about some of the calls made by the NHL situation room and it prompted Dave Jackson, a former NHL referee and now ESPN analyst to share a long thread on what really happens in Toronto when a call is reviewed.

He is adamant that some many experts are in action in that room for every single call and the work is meticulous.

“It pains me to read comments that “they flip a coin” or “don’t want a certain team or country to win” I realize that these comments are based in frustration but they are ignorant, disingenuous and could not be further from the truth.”
