Controversy in the NHL after a hot mic picks up a clear threat directed at a player.
The National Hockey League has a bit of a controversy over the weekend, one that has rapidly caught fire on social media.
During a Saturday night game between the Vancouver Canucks and Montreal Canadiens fans were treated to a bit of a hot mic moment when the broadcast of the game picked up what sounded like a pretty serious threat directed at a player. There has been debate about what was actually said and who actually said it, but this is what I heard on the broadcast:
"Keep running your mouth and I'll take you right out of the f***ing Olympics," said the unidentified player.
Now much of the speculation online has pointed the finger of blame in the direction of veteran NHL forward Kiefer Sherwood which would make sense given that he plays for the Canucks and the threat appeared to be directed at the Canadiens bench. Here is a look at the clip in question and you can judge for yourselves:
When he was asked about it, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman certainly did not disagree.
"You could see Sherwood being the kind of guy who in the heat of the moment would threaten like that," said Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast. "And I say that in a positive way."
The NHL has chosen not to comment and there were no fines or penalties handed out as a result of the threat made on Saturday, which suggests to me that this will be quickly and quietly swept back under the rug.
