The Detroit Red Wings are now surrounded by rampant trade speculation and it largely has to do with their current salary cap situation.

While it remains unclear exactly what magic general manager Ken Holland  will work to clear the necessary cap space, there is now a strong belief that a trade will be the means by which he gets the job done.

In a recent article for Bleacher report, National Hockey League analyst Lyle Richardson expressed the belief that the move is likely to come either during training camp or the NHL preseason.

From Richardson:

It's a fact the Wings must clear some cap space to re-sign Athanasiou and need to leave sufficient space for other possible moves in 2017-18. If a trade is coming, it will likely happen during training camp or preseason in September.

Craig Custance of The Athletic has also touched on the trade speculation in Detroit, and he has narrowed it down to three likely candidates for a trade deal.

From Custance:

The Red Wings aren’t going to buy anyone out, so that leaves only a salary-clearing trade as a possibility if salary needs to be cleared. Even with his pass through the expansion draft, there has been some tire kicking on goalie Petr Mrazek, someone the Red Wings would trade if the opportunity presented itself. Gustav Nyquist or Riley Sheahan are other options to move to clear salary.

Trading Mrazek, who carries a 4 million dollar salary cap hit, after a shaky season will be difficult and likely would yield a poor return for Ken Holland and the Red Wings, and this has led to speculation that Nyquist may be the favorite to be moved.

While Nyquist's numbers have declined over the past two seasons he continues to produce offensively and would likely net Holland the biggest return in a trade. Only time will tell what Holland feels is the best move for the Red Wings moving forward.
