Three player trade between the Senators and Hurricanes!

Details inside.

We have a trade to report on Saturday morning.

According to a breaking news report from Ottawa Senators insider Bruce Garrioch, the Carolina Hurricanes and the Ottawa Senators have pulled off a 3 player trade. Garrioch reports that the Senators have acquired forward Ryan Dzingel in exchange for both Cedric Paquette and Alex Galchenyuk.

As you can probably tell based on the picture I chose for this article, Dzingel is of course well known to fans in Ottawa. The 28 year old centerman unquestionably had the best years of his career in the National Hockey League with the Ottawa Senators organization, twice recording 20 goals in a season a feat that he has never managed to repeat again outside of Ottawa.

All three of the players involved in this deal have just a single year remaining on their current deals and all three are expected to be unrestricted free agents at the end of this season (barring a potential contract extension) so this would appear to be a straight up talent swap. The Hurricanes will save a little bit of salary cap space by moving Dzingel's contract which carries a cap hit of $3.375 million in exchange for Pacquette's hit of $1.65 million and Galchenyuk's hit of $1.05 million, a savings of $675,000. That is of course less than the amount you would need to sign a player to a league minimum contract, so it would not appear to have been a major consideration in this trade.

From what we can gather at this time, it does not appear as though salary has been retained in this transaction on either side.

Dzingel has 11 games under his belt this season with the Hurricanes, having collected 2 goals and 2 assists for a combined 4 points. He also boasts a plus minus rating of -2 and has 2 penalty minutes to his name.

Pacquette has 9 games with the Senators, in those games he has just a single goal and is a -8 on the season with 4 penalty minutes to his name.

Galchenyuk has just 1 goal in 8 games and is a -6 on the season with 6 penalty minutes to his name. He can't love the fact that he will be headed to his 4th team in the last 2 seasons.
