The season is coming up slowly but surely and there are still very good players that remain unsigned. Hockey Feed is taking a look at the best unrestricted free agent.
- Cody Franson, D: Franson has played under one year contract for the last three seasons. After being traded to Nashville last campaign, he finished with career numbers posting 36 points. Franson is a rare commodity in the NHL, with an accurate and powerful shot from the point, a right-handed defense man of his size could help a team by filling a top-4 role. The B.C native is also solid defensively. Franson must looking at Montreal Canadiens Jef Petry's contract, 6 years $33M. The Boston Bruins and the Vancouver Canucks would be perfect destination for the defender, put Toronto is still in the mix. Cody Franson asking too much might be the only reason why he is still on the market.
- Curtis Glencross, F: Glencross is the type of player that you like to add to your team around the trade deadline. His lack of contribution in Washington during the playoffs has hurt him a lot. A consistent contributor in calgary, Glencross is very good depth forward. A solid veteran he can provide decent offensive numbers, while surrounding few goals against. Rumours are sending him in Florida or Toronto. Although he would be a good fit there, sources say that he would be a great fit in New York (Rangers) or in Colorado, where he would reunite with Jarome Iginla. Unfortunately for Glencross, his playoffs performance are taking away much of his negotiating arguments.
- Jonas Gustavsson, G: Although Josh Harding is the best net minder still unsigned, I doubt any team will take a chance with him because of complications with multiple sclerosis. Gustavsson remains a very viable option at back-up. He proved in Detroit that he could still play in the NHL, but that his potential would never grant him a starting job in the NHL. The monster could stabilize a young starting goaltender in the NHL. He could be a better option in Columbus than Curtis McElhinny. The Islanders would make a good move by signing Gustavsson instead of Tomas Greiss.
No matter where these guys end up, they will be a great addition to the team that signs them. As long as they play in the role they are suppose to, and are signed at a reasonable price, they will fit well with their new team.
