Big money for the former Leafs blueliner.
This just in, the Washington Capitals have signed defeneman Timothy Liljegren to a two year contract worth $6.5 million total.
From the Capitals' official press release statement:
The Washington Capitals have re-signed defenseman Timothy Liljegren to a two-year, $6.5 million contract extension, senior vice president and general manager Chris Patrick announced today. Liljegren's contract will carry an average annual value of $3.25 million.
Liljegren, 27, recorded 11 points (1g, 10a) in 47 games with the Capitals and San Jose Sharks during the 2025-26 season. Washington acquired Liljegren from San Jose on March 6 for a fourth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft (originally from Vegas). Liljegren, who appeared in four games with the Capitals, ranked second among Sharks defensemen in blocked shots (83), tied for third in assists, and fourth in points and ice time per game (20:08) before joining Washington. Liljegren’s 19:51 of average ice time in 2025-26 marked a career high.
The Swedish defenseman has had one of the more fascinating development arcs in recent NHL memory. Once viewed as a potential top-five draft talent before illness impacted his draft stock, Liljegren ultimately fell to the Toronto Maple Leafs at 17th overall in the 2017 NHL Draft. For Toronto fans, it felt like a steal at the time — a smooth-skating right-shot defenseman with offensive upside and poise under pressure.
But Liljegren’s NHL journey has never been entirely smooth.
After spending valuable time developing with the Marlies in the AHL, Liljegren slowly worked his way into Toronto’s lineup. The flashes were obvious immediately. Excellent puck movement, calm decision-making and the ability to transition the puck out of danger made him an intriguing modern defenseman. The problem? Consistency. Every time it seemed like Liljegren was ready to lock down a permanent top-four role, injuries or defensive lapses would slow the momentum.
Still, there were encouraging stretches. During the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons, Liljegren showed legitimate growth, averaging nearly 18 minutes per game while contributing solid secondary offense from the blue line. He posted a career-high 23 points in 55 games during the 2023-24 campaign.
Unfortunately for Liljegren, a coaching change in Toronto dramatically altered his standing within the organization. Under head coach Craig Berube, Liljegren quickly found himself on the outside looking in, eventually leading to a trade to the San Jose Sharks in 2024.
Now entering the next chapter of his career, Liljegren remains an intriguing player. He has already surpassed 300 NHL games and continues to possess the skating and puck-moving tools teams covet in today’s NHL. Whether he ultimately becomes a dependable top-four defender or settles into a depth role may depend on finally finding long-term stability and confidence at the NHL level.
