This one hurt to watch.

On Sunday, the Washington Capitals lost the services of Capitals enforcer Tom Wilson when the veteran forward suffered a nasty looking injury.

Wilson and the Capitals were facing off against the Pittsburgh Penguins when, during the game's second period, Wilson's attempt to block a shot would go horribly wrong.

The Capitals were up 1-0 in a must-win game as far as their playoff hopes are concerned and Wilson intended to keep things that way. That's why when Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson lined up at the blue line for a rocket of a shot, Wilson did not hesitate to put himself in harm's way and threw his body in front of that shot.

Unfortunately for Wilson that shot would catch him on the part of his skate that offers the least protection, sending Wilson collapsing down to the ice in a heap. The Capitals enforcer isn't one to nurse injuries on the ice, and the fact that he was unable to get up under his own power is a very concerning sign to be sure.

Wilson would be helped off the ice by his teammates, but even when he reached the Capitals bench it was obvious that he was still struggling as he attempted to make his way down the hallway and into the Capitals locker room.

Here's a look at the replay:

Update: Wilson has returned for the third period.
