Filip Chytil helped off the ice after a huge open ice hit from Tom Wilson.
This is a bad sign for the Vancouver Canucks.
Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson has shown himself to be one of the most dominant physical players in the National Hockey League in recent years and on Sunday, during a game between the Canucks and Capitals, Wilson once again lived up to that reputation.
The game's first period was all Canucks with them taking a 3-0 lead over the Capitals, but later in the period it would be Wilson who would completely shift the tone of the game. Wilson would catch Canucks forward Filip Chytil with his head down, delivering a thunderous body check that stopped Chytil like he had just skated into a brick wall. Chytil was down on the ice and you could tell that he was in rough shape, unable to get back to his feet under his own power.
Instead Chytil would be helped off the ice by members of the Canucks training staff, as well as his fellow teammates, with Chytil needing help to get into the locker room even after being helped back to the bench.
Here is a look at the replay of the hit:
Although the broadcast would initially call this a terrible hit, and it was indeed ruled a major penalty on the ice, after review the officials on the ice would determine that it was a clean hit on the part of Wilson. As a result Wilson not only was spared a major penalty, but received no penalty at all for the hit on Chytil.
As I mentioned this is terrible news for the Canucks as Chytil was the centerpiece of the return they received from the New York Rangers when they traded forward J.T. Miller. The concern at the time was that Chytil, despite being a talented player, had a history of concussion issues and that of course will be the major concern today as well.
