Should he have received additional punishment?
Washington Capitals enforcer Tom Wilson has run afoul of the National Hockey League more than a few times in his career, with two notable examples being his blindsight hit on Oskar Sundqvist in 2018 along with his stunning on-ice attack of Rangers forward Artemi Panarin in 2021.
And during last night's game against the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs at Capital One Arena, he once again went viral for a shocking incident. However, it appears as though it may have been accidental, though a player like Wilson isn't necessarily going to get the benefit of the doubt.
During the 1st period of what would eventually be a 7-3 Leafs victory, Wilson caught Gregor up high with a one-handed swing of his stick to the latter's face. Wilson immediately appeared to regret the action, but was still assessed a four-minute double minor.
The Leafs would make Wilson and the Capitals pay by scoring on the ensuing power play. But should Wilson have gotten in additional trouble with the on-ice officials or perhaps even the National Hockey League Department of Player Safety?
He's been suspended five times in his career, including the aforementioned incident against Sundqvist that earned him a 20-game ban.
