Tony DeAngelo taunted by brutal chants in Game 6.
MSG letting DeAngelo know.
The New York Rangers and the Carolina Hurricanes faced off in Game 6 of their second round Stanley Cup playoff series on Saturday night, with the Rangers emerging victorious from that contest to give the Hurricanes their 6th road loss of the postseason and force a 7th and final game in this series.
The game was largely out of reach in the game's third period with the Rangers taking an early three goal lead, and it would be during that third period that tempers between the Rangers and the Hurricanes would flare up. This got especially heated late in the game when, roughly midway through the third period. notorious Hurricanes defenseman and former New York Ranger Tony DeAngelo once again stirred the pot.
DeAngelo, who was clearly looking to get a reaction out of his former teammates, fired the puck into the Rangers net well after the whistle had blown leading to a huge scrum between the two teams along the boards next to the Rangers net. Not much would come of this other than some pushing and shoving, but when the dust had settled the fans at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night really let DeAngelo know what they think of him.
Fans could be heard chanting the word "Asshole" over and over again with what sounded like all of the breath in their lungs, with the chants becoming especially clear as the referee announced the penalties that resulted from the scrum.
After that initial chant fans would once again begin taunting DeAngelo while he sat in the box, this time showering him with taunts of "f*** you Tony!" as their home team slowly choked out the Hurricanes in Game 6.
If you haven't seen the moment that set all of this off it was, as I mentioned earlier, relatively mild. DeAngelo didn't fire a rocket into the Rangers net or anything like that, but his intent was quite clear and the response from the Rangers quite predictable. Shooting the puck into the net after the whistle is simply a violation of one of hockey's unwritten rules.
