The free agent frenzy in the National Hockey League has quieted down considerably since it opened up on July 1st, and that is likely due in large part to some of the truly enormous contracts we've seen handed out already this summer.

Teams will be much more reluctant to pay top dollar for players that may not have been their first, or even their second, choice, and finding high quality options is becoming more and more difficult by the day. There is no position where this is more apparent than the goaltending position with very few options left to teams hoping to secure some goaltending depth through free agency.

Today I will be looking at the Top 5 unrestricted free agent goaltenders who remain unsigned, and it's slim pickings.

#1 Connor Ingram.

Although it was far from his best season in the NHL with a 2.60 goals against average and a .899 save percentage, Ingram did have a big time bounce back season after going through some difficult personal struggles in recent years. The 29 year old is the youngest name on this list and showed he can take on a significant workload by appearing in 32 games for the Oilers last season.

#2 Cam Talbot

Talbot's season with the Detroit Red Wings very much mirrored Ingram's with the Oilers with the veteran goaltender appearing in 34 games but struggling with a 3.19 goals against average and a .883 save percentage. Talbot drops to #2 because of his age with 39 years old being up there for an NHL goaltender. That being said he was coming off solid seasons with the Los Angeles Kings and Red Wings prior to this past season and is a better option than some of the other names on this list.

#3 Petr Mrazek

Mrazek falls down the list due to a ton of question marks surrounding his future. The 34 year old netminder played just 10 games for the Anaheim Ducks last season, recording a 4.07 goals against average and a .858 save percentage, before suffering a season ending injury. Those numbers wouldn't inspire confidence even without the injury, making Mrazek a big time risk at this stage of his career.

#4 Matt Murray

Matt Murray played just 5 games in the NHL last season after returning from yet another injury, but he takes the #4 spot on the list. Murray's return was solid with a 2.21 goals against average and a .922 save percentage over those 5 games and he looked good in his last showing prior to the latest injury as well. During the 2024-25 season Murray shined with the American Hockey League's Toronto Marlies, recording a 1.72 goals against average and a .934 save percentage over 21 games.

Whether or not anyone is willing to take a risk on such an injury-prone goaltender however remains to be seen.

#5 James Reimer

Although there has been much talk of retirement surrounding Reimer in recent years, he keeps coming back for more. This past season he appeared in 14 games for the Ottawa Senators where he had a 2.42 goals against average and a .886 save percentage but, with retirement a real consideration for Reimer at this stage of his career, he falls to the #5 spot.
