Fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs could soon be getting a look at a highly touted prospect sooner rather than later. Russian forward Dmitri Ovchinnikov, whom the Leafs took 137th in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, has terminated his contract with the KHL's Sibir Novosibirsk Oblast and his headed to North America.
In 68 games played this season, he's tallied five goals with eight assists. He's also previously spent time with Toronto's American Hockey League affiliate squad the Toronto Marlies, having scored twice in seven games played during the 2021-22 season.
For fans who aren't as familiar with the Russian forward, take a look at his scouting profile via Elite Prospects:
"He plays with pace, attacks the inside, cuts through traffic, makes flashy net drives, and creates passing lane. He identifies the trailer and teammates through layers. Defensively, Ovchinnikov brings refined decision-making and discipline. He supports the play, keeps an active stick to deter passes, and brings a consistent effort."
