Tortorella and Michkov have their first on-ice disagreement and the Flyers lose it

Bro really tried “The Michigan” in his first practice under Torts!?!?!

Trevor Connors

The Matvei Michkov Era has officially begun in Philadelphia whether John Tortorella likes it or not.

Michkov officially joined the Flyers' rookies for prospect development camp today where he was under the close watch of Tortorella and the rest of the team's coaching staff. That's when Michkov reportedly attempted "The Michigan" in practice much to the dismay of Torts. In the end though, all Tortorella and the Flyers' staff could do was laugh at the situation.

From Flyers insider Jon Bailey:

I mean... what are you gonna do? You've gotta let horses run, right?

If you're unclear on what exactly 'The Michigan' is, it refers to the lacrosse style goal made famous by former NCAA Michigan player Mike Legg.

Check out Chicago Blackhawks superstar in the making Connor Bedard scoring with the Michigan last season against the St. Louis Blues:

Torts absolutely went off on the 'hot dog' style goal after Trevor Zegras and Sonny Milano hooked up on one back in 2021. Let's just say, Torts wasn't a fan.

"It's fun to watch, it's really cool but I think our game has gone so far away from what the game should be, a hard game, an honest game, it's almost gotten too showman, I know you need to have it, you need to sell the game..."

"I'm from the ilk that it's still a hard game to play and a good, honest hockey game needs to be played. I think some of this stuff can get carried away".

"I'm not trying to be a fool here but I'm not so sure it's good for the game. If you did that back in 2000, late 90's, you'd get your head taken off. It's cool, it's cool to watch but I'm not so sure it's good for the game and I stand by that".

- John Tortorella

I'm willing to bet that Torts might have a different opinion on the goal though if it's his own team filling the net with these hot dog style goals.
