The Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks may be division rivals, but they are linked in a potential trade ahead of the March 3rd deadline.
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the Flames might have checked in on defenseman Luke Schenn.
Schenn will be a free agent in the offseason and is likely to be moved as a rental ahead of the trade deadline.
The Flames are not the only team that are reportedly in the mix for Schenn. The blue liner is said to have caught the attention of the Boston Bruins and Tampa Bay Lightning as well, per insider Pierre LeBrun.
“My understanding is that some contenders have reached out to the Canucks to check on Schenn, including the Bruins and Lightning,” LeBrun wrote Wednesday. “Not surprising. But the dilemma for Vancouver is whether to grab the best possible trade return or extend Schenn, who is an important leader on the team with Horvat gone and I believe is open to staying.”
It’s understandable that teams like the Flames are looking to Schenn as an option for a boost on the back end. He can play 15-18 minutes per game in tough, defensive situation. Schenn, who won two Stanley Cup titles with the Lightning in 2019-20 and 2020-21, is also great to have on the penalty kills.
His salary cap hit of just $850,000 is quite attractive for contenders and would be a great fit for the Flames.
Will the Canucks accept to deal with such a close rival?
