The Boston Bruins are feeling the pressure to trade a player, and Boston Hockey Now’s Jimmy Murphy recently cited an informed NHL source claiming forward Craig Smith has been on the trade market since the offseason started.
The source also revealed to Murphy that the Bruins had recent in-depth trade discussions with another club, to the point where the Bruins got a trade offer for Smith.
“I can confirm an actual trade offer was made but after trying to find common ground for awhile, the talks were put on hold,” the source told BHN. “This team really wanted Smith and wanted this to happen.”
The Bruins are currently $2.2 million above the $82.5 million salary cap. General manager Don Sweeney needs to shed some salary and he could manage to do so by placing a sidelined player such as Charlie McAvoy, Brad Marchand or Matt Grzelcyk on long-term injury reserve to start the season. But he might be in too deep trade talks for Smith…
It remains to be seen which team could be the interested party in acquiring Smith’s services. Lyle Richardson has heard that the Nashville Predators could be the ones looking to get the veteran forward back in Music City.
The trade does not need to happen or any other move for that matter: the Bruins are allowed to be over the cap by 10 percent during the summer. Once the season kicks off, placing McAvoy or Marchand on long-term injury reserve will temporarily address that cap issue but Boston will have to dump some salary to become cap compliant when the sidelined player comes off LTIR…
And so, does Smith move now or once the puck is dropped?
