Elliotte Friedman says the Oilers could be forced to shake up its roster as trade talks begin to heat up.
The Edmonton Oilers might have a decision to make on the blue line, and sooner rather than later.
During Monday’s episode of 32 Thoughts: The Podcast, insider Elliotte Friedman pointed out that the Oilers are carrying eight defensemen, which isn’t ideal for roster balance or cap management. According to Friedman, the situation could eventually force Edmonton’s hand.
“I think Edmonton, they’ve got some injuries on the blue line too,” Friedman said. “When Regula is healthy and Walman’s now coming back, they’ve got eight or nine guys, including the guys in the AHL.
“So, I think eventually Edmonton could be looking at (waiving or trading a defenseman), too.”
With cap space tight and the lineup crowded, speculation is already brewing about which blue liner could be the odd man out. Rumours have already started buzzing on several depth players who could draw interest from other teams seeking affordable defensive depth.
Among them are Ty Emberson, Troy Stecher, and Alex Regula, all serviceable options depending on what rival general managers are looking for. Regula, currently on a two-way contract carrying a $775,000 average annual value, offers flexibility for teams needing call-up insurance. Stecher’s one-way deal comes in slightly higher at $787,500, while Emberson’s $1.3-million cap hit could make him a tougher fit, though he has another year left on his contract.
Carrying eight defensemen gives Edmonton insurance against injuries, but it’s a luxury that could become costly as the season progresses. The Oilers may prefer to move someone now rather than risk losing a depth piece for nothing down the road.
For a team chasing stability after a shaky start on the road to a trip back to the Stanley Cup Final, tough roster choices are nothing new. The Oilers’ blue line is crowded, and something’s got to give.
