We are fast approaching the halfway of the season and the feeling remains that Patrick Kane will be moved ahead of the trade deadline in early 2023. While Kane has mentioned in the past his desire to retire as a Blackhawk and end his career in Chicago, there is a growing sense that the superstar could look to be traded to a Stanley Cup contender for another chance at a championship before hanging up the skates.
On Wednesday, Lyle Richardson of the Hockey News put together all of the information on the Kane and revealed how Daily Face-off’s Frank Seravalli “believes Blackhawks management will meet with their longtime superstar in December to gauge his interest in a trade.”
Richardson also offers the position of The Athletic’s Mark Lazerus, who is forced to say that a trade appears to be inevitable despite the fact that Lane probably would prefer to stay in Chicago.
Kane carries a $10.5 million cap hit plus a full no-movement clause giving him full control over where he might go, “limited to Stanley Cup contenders, which might total at most a half-dozen clubs,” as Richardson points out.
Kane has been linked to several contenders like the Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, New York Rangers and Buffalo Sabres. It is believed the New York Islanders, Los Angeles Kings, Pittsburgh Penguins and Calgary Flames could also compete for Kane’s services.
The leading contender will need to make room for Kane’s hefty salary and be willing to part with a big return to pull off this trade. Many believe the Hawks could seek something comparable to what the Philadelphia Flyers got last spring for moving Claude Giroux to the Florida Panthers. The Flyers got a young forward in Owen Tippett, a conditional first-round pick in 2024 or 2025, and a 2023 third-rounder.
We’ll probably know more around that meeting which is coming real soon if Seravalli is right.
