The last few days have probably been hard on New York Rangers forward Alexis Lafreniere, who was called out on social media for his lack of productivity during the first-round series against the New Jersey Devils in which the Blue Shirts were eliminated. Lafreniere didn’t manage to put up a point and appeared slow on several shifts. Some folks even compared him to Nail Yapukov, another first overall pick that has failed to impress…

Still, that hasn’t stopped the rumour mill from putting his name out there and on Wednesday, a reporter from BPM Sports in Montreal, Mathias Brunet, suggested a trade scenario that could bring Lafreniere to Canada. And you’ve guessed it, the Montreal Canadiens are linked to the speculation as many believe Lafreniere could thrive closer to his hometown and family.

Brunet wonders if general manager Kent Hughes could make another move, similar to the trade he pulled to acquired Kirby Dach. The similarities are present: Hughes got a young player who is currently playing below expectations, but could benefit from a change of scenery. We saw how successful it was for Dach in 2022-23. That’s why Brunet would be tempted to do the same thing with Lafreniere.

It all depends on the price. I can’t imagine Hughes would be willing to part with the Canadiens’ first-round pick this summer for a trade involving Lafreniere, who is currently in the last year of his NHL entry contract and is set to become restricted free agent this summer.

Brunet suggests offering a player like Josh Anderson in addition to a prospect in return for the services of Lafreniere.

Do you believe this is a proposal that makes sense for the Habs? for Lafreniere? Would you pull the trigger if you were GM of the Canadiens?
