With a record of 8-10-3, Craig Berube has done everything but call certain players out in public to try and wake the team up. Ron Hextall is not a GM who is going to hesitate to make the team better. He was reportedly one of the most active GM's last week in Toronto, and is known to have an itchy trigger finger. Today Hockey insider and TSN analyst Darren Dreger spoke about the Flyers desire to make a deal on TSN1260 this morning. "Yeah. I mean, all along we’ve talked about getting to the 20-game mark and Philadelphia was in that group of teams that was wanting to assess and analyze where they’re at. Now that they’re past that, it looks somewhat grim. Their biggest concern is on defense, but again, that’s a tough area to try and improve in-season unless you’re overpaying to get a player." Dreger continues to say, “But Hextall has a vision. He knows he’s got to improve this club. He knows he’s got to fix his blueline. He knows that he might require some changes up front. I still believe that at some point this season Vincent Lecavalier is going to get traded, but what do you get in return? So there’s a lot of pieces in Philadelphia that other teams want. But is the rate of return coming back going to be enough to execute that deal? Dreger stated later that even Brayden Schenn was not off limits. “Brayden Schenn’s name continually is out there. And it’s not because the Philadelphia Flyers are shopping him. It’s because he’s believed to be an attainable piece. A player that could be available for the right offer. Schenn has begun to show some spark on a line with Claude Giroux and Jake Voracek, so it is less than likely he will be so easily traded. Unfortunately for Hextall, there probably is not that many tams lining up to take a shot at Lecavalier. He's 34 years old and has three years remaining on a 4.5 million dollar cap hit yearly. R.J Umberger and Luke Schenn do not gather enough interest from other teams at the moment either. If Hextall wants to improve on defence , a greater piece of the team may nedd to be given up. Hextall hates trading out of the minors, so that leaves a few names out there. The selection would be Brayden Schenn, Michael Raffl, Sean Couturier, Wayne Simmonds, Matt Read, and Scott Laughton. You don't improve in this league by giving away nothing and trying to get something in return. The question is, how big is Hextall going to dig in.
