Reports hinted that a meeting between the Chicago Blackhawks and star forward Patrick Kane would take place shortly to discuss the looming trade that everyone expects.
But not so fast…
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, Kane might not want to be moved after all.
“Good line on Wednesday about Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews: “Right now, there’s more talk from people who can’t make it happen than from people who can.” Expect this to gain traction in the new year, with more clarity on what (or where) both players prefer. On some level, I think Kane in particular would like to take a run at some of Stan Mikita’s franchise records (games played, assists and points). Therefore, there were rumours he might prefer to play out the season in Chicago and decide his future in free agency, but several sources threw cold water on that idea. As you can imagine, there’s been no extension talk in either case. “
It’s been said more than once that Kane could lean towards the opportunity to be traded to a Stanley Cup contender for another chance at a championship before hanging up the skates. However, these milestones might be more important to Kane, who considers Chicago a second home.
Kane carries a $10.5 million cap hit plus a full no-movement clause giving him full control over where he might go.
But he might stay too.
Kane has been linked to several contenders like the Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, New York Rangers and Buffalo Sabres. It is believed the New York Islanders, Los Angeles Kings, Pittsburgh Penguins and Calgary Flames could also compete for Kane’s services.
However, the Blackhawks remain a contender too it seems.
