Professional hockey players have always said that real life is way more important than what goes on the ice. It is the case for National Hockey League former first round pick Colten Teubert, who announced tragic news on his Instagram account on Thursday.

Teubert, who was selected 13th overall by the Los Angeles Kings in 2008, revealed that his wife Ashley has a life-threatening carvenous ventricle malformation in her brain and requires serious surgery.

The family, who is located in Germany where Teubert plays for the Thomas Sabo Ice Tigers Nürnberg, needs to relocate the Pacific Coast where the 27-year-old is asking for work opportunities.

Teubert is currently in rehab for back injury. In just 24 NHL games with the Edmonton Oilers, the defenseman recorded a single assist.

Our thoughts and prayers got out to Teubert, his wife Ashley and his entire family.
