Tragic update from the family of Alex Luey.

We sadly have some terrible news to bring you today.

According to an announcement made by Scott Luey, the father of National Hockey League superfan Alex Luey, on social media this morning Alex has lost his 3 year battle with cancer. The news is frankly nothing short of awful and the fact that it comes just 3 days before Christmas makes my heart break for the Luey family. Poor Alex fought bravely for the past 3 years and very much deserved to win his battle with cancer but unfortunately life simply is not always fair and this serves as just yet another example.

In the purpose of preserving Scott's intent here is his announcement unedited and in full:

Early this morning our son Alex’s 3-year battle with cancer ended when he passed away in his sleep at the hospital. Alex battled bravely and touched many lives during his life. I won’t be on social media over the holidays but I will post funeral arrangements shortly.

Scott ended the message by simply adding #LUEYstrong, the hashtag that they had used to promote awareness for their sons condition for all these years as they desperately searched for an answer to their prayers. I hope that the Luey family can take some small comfort in the fact that Alex passed peacefully in his sleep and in the fact that his suffering has finally come to an end after so many years of dealing with a terrible disease that has touched so many of our lives.

Alex of course was an inspiration to thousands of people in and around the National Hockey League and as a result comes as no surprise this morning to see a massive outpouring of support for Scott and his family from the hockey community.

Washington Capitals superstar Alexander Ovechkin had a close connection with Alex and considered him his good luck charm, he had this to say this upon learning of the news:

Our Caps family heartbroken...so sad to hear Alex Luey pass away today. Such a great kid. He inspire me and our team with his strength. My family will pray for him and his mom and dad. Love you bro. I will miss seeing you in Toronto. Rest In Peace

Again my thoughts and condolences go out to the Luey family at this time. I am so very sorry for your loss.
