The Senators head coach announces a coaching change on Saturday.
The Ottawa Senators have made a major change behind the bench, with the unexpected news announced on Saturday.
On Saturday, Sens head coach Travis Green spoke to the media ahead of a clash against the Carolina Hurricanes. During that media availability Green made the sudden and unexpected announcement that a coaching change was being made behind the scenes, with former National Hockey League head coach Mike Yeo taking on a bigger role.
"There's been a lot of talk about our [penalty] kill," admitted Green before making the announcement. "Mike Yeo is gonna be the voice of our penalty kill now."
Of course the news immediately brings into question the status of Senators assistant coach Nolan Baumgartner who was previously running the penalty kill. According to Green however Baumgartner will continue to advise in his current role, although Yeo will be calling the shots moving forward.
"The penalty kill hasn't gone the way we've wanted and that's not just on him," said Green. "Ultimately the players have to get the job done, but a new voice might give a spark, give a different look."
Green acknowledged that the team has heard the criticism of their penalty kill and didn't shy away from that one bit.
"There's been a lot of talk about our PK, I know that, rightfully so," said Green. "We haven't got the job done. I think it quite easily could be in a different position that it is."
Big changes behind the bench for the Senators and a bit of an unusual situation with Green himself announcing the news. It does make me wonder if more changes may be ahead if the Senators don't turn things around sooner rather than later.
