The Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens put on quite a show for fans who tuned in to their matchup on Saturday night, with a back and forth game that saw plenty of scoring on both sides. The Canadiens would walk away the victors however, eventually winning by a score of 6-5 in overtime, and after the game it was clear that much of the blame for the Senators loss would fall on the shoulders of one man.

That man is Senators goaltender Leevi Merilainen who had an abysmal performance on Saturday night, allowing the Canadiens to score 6 goals despite only putting 19 shots on goal, bad enough for a save percentage of .684 on the evening.

When asked about the performance of his goaltender during his post game comments, Senators head coach Travis Green made no effort to shield him from the criticism coming his way.

"It's hard to give him a pass," admitted Green after the loss. "6 goals on 18 shots, I'm sure he would like to have one or two back. I feel bad for him."

Although the comments regarding Merilainen's performance were damning in their own right, they look even worse when contrasted to how Green spoke of the performance from the rest of his team.

"Minus the score, really good, love our game," said Green of his team's performance. "That was a pretty good hockey game for our group."

When asked if he was frustrated at goaltending being a constant source of issues for the Senators this season, Green admitted that it was.

"It's a little bit frustrating," admitted Green.

It sounds like Green intends to use that frustration as motivation moving forward.

"Our team can hang their head or they can be mad, I'd rather us be mad," said Green. "We played a hell of a hockey game tonight."

What that means for Leevi Merilainen, who has had a poor season with a 3.51 goals against average and a .860 save percentage, moving forward remains to be seen.
