Travis Hamonic has rejoined his Vancouver Canucks’ teammates after missing the start of the season due to personal issues.

It was revealed by captain Bo Horvat that Hamonic faced his teammates to explained his process and why he was away from the Canucks (3-5-1). Horvat added that it meant a lot to the players, who are looking forward to have Hamonic in the lineup.

When meeting with reporters, Hamonic stated that he is following the NHL’s protocols for COVID-19. There was chatter that Hamonic could have been away from the team because he did not want to be vaccinated. He declined to say what specially kept him away from the team, though Horvat and his teammates are aware and appreciative of his process.

“My family’s walking this walk with me and understands fully what’s going on and the [Canucks] organization does as well,” Hamonic said. “So for me, those two very important groups in my life understand what’s going on, that’s enough for me.”

The veteran blue liner signed a two-year, $6 million contract with the Canucks in the offseason, but did not report to training camp and was subsequently suspended by the team. While he was initially given a temporary leave of absence and then sent to the AHL’s Abbotsford Canucks, the team officially suspended him and issued at the time a statement that Hamonic would remain at home with his family and may join the team at a later date.

Hamonic has played 675 regular-season games over 11 NHL seasons with the Canucks, Calgary Flames and New York Islanders - and now has more in store for Vancouver with supportive teammates.
