Trending: Which NHL team do Canadians love the most?

Ask seven different Canadian hockey fans which NHL team they consider to be “Canada’s team” and you’re likely to get seven different answers. Luckily, search giant Google has stepped up with some data to help settle the score.

Google Canada has been collecting data for the past week on NHL search terms based on geography and have found that the Edmonton Oilers are the top team in western Canada, Toronto Maple Leafs in central Canada the Maritimes, and the Montreal Canadiens the top team in Quebec. Interestingly, northern Canada was split between the Oilers and the Leafs, as well.

Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks fans likely aren’t too happy to be painted with the same “orange crush” colored brush as Oilers fans, but the data doesn’t lie. Also, how do you think Ottawa Senators fans feel? They’re in perhaps the best playoff position of any of the Canadian teams and aren’t getting any love on Google from their fellow Canadians. Also absent from the list are the Winnipeg Jets. Jets fans, is it true? Have you all become Leafs fans?

As the NHL playoffs roll on and the Oilers, Leafs, Senators and Canadiens either continue to push on or bow out, it’ll be interesting to see how the trends change and who will ultimately take the title of “Canada’s team” for the 2016-17 season.
