Trade rumours have circled around Anaheim Ducks star forward Trevor Zegras, despite him being sidelined with injury, ever since his former teammate defenseman Jamie Drysdale and a high draft pick were traded to the Philadelphia Flyers in return for Cutter Gauthier. With recent action on the trade front, this has prompted TVA Sports’s Max Lapierre to wonder what the Montreal Canadiens could do next after trading Sean Monahan to the Winnipeg Jets for a 2024 first-round pick and a conditional 2027 third-rounder last week, and he believes it could materialize in a trade for Zegras.

The mock trade sends Zegras to the Canadiens, where the young forward would reunite with one of his best friends Cole Caufield in exchange for a package deal that would include one of the Habs’ two first-round picks in this year’s draft. Lapierre believes that Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes could use some of those picks as trade bait as he’s done in the past to land both Kirby Dack and Alex Newhook.

Adding Zegras to the Habs’ lineup would definitely speed up their rebuilding process, but any potential trade involving Zegras will demand a hefty return, no matter which team looks to acquire him.

Zegras, who is currently sidelined due to a broken ankle that required surgery, has had a rougher time in Anaheim. After missing training camp in September to his prolonged contract negotiations before agreeing to a three-year deal worth an average annual value of $5.8 million, he has been limited to just seven points in 20 games. But this comes after back-to-back 60-plus point performances over the last two seasons.

When Lapierre went on about this possible trade scenario, Canadiens fans quickly jump on board. Now will Hughes do the same?
