There is a major trade on the horizon.

According to a report from the National Hockey League's top insider, Elliotte Friedman, the Anaheim Ducks are on the verge of trading star forward Trevor Zegras.

From Friedman:

According to multiple sources, the Anaheim Ducks are in “significant discussions” with multiple teams on a Trevor Zegras trade, and the likelihood is growing the talented 24-year-old forward could be traded this week.

Zegras has been the subject of trade speculation for some time now despite his obvious talent, and unfortunately for the Ducks this would come at a time when Zegras' value may be at an all-time low. Zegras has appeared in just 88 games over the last two seasons, scoring 18 goals and adding 29 assists for a total of 47 points over that stretch.

That being said Zegras has shown that he can still produce offensively despite being limited to so few games, and is a player that comes with significant team control. Zegras is entering the final year of a 3 year contract he signed with the Ducks, one that carries an average annual value and salary cap hit of $5.75 million per season, but he will be a restricted free agent when that deal expires giving any team acquiring him plenty of control over his future.

It's also worth noting that Zegras has become something of a social media star with nearly 400,000 followers on Instagram despite playing in what isn't exactly the biggest hockey market on the planet in Anaheim. While that won't bring teams any value on the ice, it does bring significant value when it comes to attracting fans to your team and there are plenty of teams around the NHL that could use help in that regard.

I suspect that this deal would come as a relief to both the Ducks and Zegras, who have seemingly been unable to find a happy marriage since the Ducks drafted Zegras 9th overall at the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.
