Late on Tuesday, the Anaheim Ducks announced that their Executive Vice President and General Manager Bob Murray has been placed on administrative leave pending an ongoing investigation related to professional conduct.

This was the statement from the team: “We recently became aware of accusations of improper professional conduct against Bob Murray. After internal review, we enlisted Shephard Mullin to perform an independent investigation. Upon recommendation from their initial findings, we have decided to place Bob on administrative leave pending final results. In the interim, Vice President of Hockey Operations and Assistant General Manager Jeff Solomon will assume the role of Interim General Manager. We will have no further comment until the investigation is complete.”

Later that day on Insider Trading on TSN, Darren Dreger and Chris Johnston revealed more on why Murray is under investigation and what it means for the Ducks:

“That’s the essence of what we know. We have had the opportunity to speak to a couple of sources. It sounds like, according to sources, the allegations are based on how Bob Murray dealt with coaches and staff members. The threatening of job security, the threatening of being berated, that type of behaviour.

“I’m reminded, going back several days, when commissioner Gary Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly held their media conference and they made it abundantly clear that no matter what it is, anything deemed to be inappropriate with any of the 32 clubs in the NHL needs to be reported so this could be a byproduct of that.”

Johnston believes that it started with one complaint and things escalated quickly from there.

“What’s significant in this situation is the order of events. There had already been an investigation started into Bob Murray’s conduct after a complaint or multiple complaints were brought forward and then they’ve decided to place him on this leave and have Jeff Solomon replace him on an interim basis.

That, to me, suggests that there was enough to make this move now. It’s not the case that they’re doing this and trying to figure out what went on. Based on what they’ve seen they’ve taken this rather large step. Now it’s an independent investigation on a general manager who was in the final year of his contract with the Anaheim Ducks.”

Later, it was Daily Face-Off’s Frank Seravalli’s turn to say what he knows about Murray and the investigation in Anaheim, “after allegations of “mental warfare” - repeated verbal abuse and harassment of players and staff, plus intimidation tactics and temper tantrums that fostered a culture of fear in organization.”

“Working for Bob Murray was pure daily mental warfare,” one source said. “The abuse was endless. Crazy text messages to players and staff berating them for their performance and threats of job security happened with regularity. These weren’t one-time slip-ups or mistakes. These were regular explosions and eruptions.”

Another source said: “There’s not just one skeleton in the closet here with ‘Murph,’” as Murray is known by his nickname around the NHL. “The list of people who have felt his wrath first-hand over the years is long.”

The investigation will surely reveal more once it is made public. Let’s hope we get to the bottom of this.
