Troy Stecher Own GOal

Troy Stecher forgets he's no longer an Oiler, scores on his own team.

A huge fail from Maple Leafs defenseman Troy Stecher on Saturday night.

I gotta be honest, I feel for Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Troy Stecher after this one.

Saturday night should have been a big night for Stecher who was facing his former team, the Edmonton Oilers, for the first time since being placed on waivers earlier in the season. Stecher, who has looked excellent with the Maple Leafs since being claimed, has played like he has a chip on his shoulder since being claimed off waivers and you have to imagine that he had a matchup against his former team marked on his calendar.

Unfortunately for Stecher things have not gone his way with a complete disaster of a situation for the veteran defenseman in the second period. A bad turnover from the Maple Leafs resulted in the puck on the stick of Oilers star forward Connor McDavid, and unfortunately for Stecher things would go about as bad as possible for him.

The scoring chance was negated and McDavid was forced behind the net and behind Maple Leafs goaltender Dennis Hildeby, but McDavid fired off the puck in front of the net and in the direction of his former teammate, who promptly slammed the puck into the back of the Maple Leafs net.

Now to be fair to Stecher here I suspect that he was likely trying to break up an attempted pass on the part of McDavid, but instead of clearing the puck safely off to the side of the net he put it behind Hildeby and donated a goal to his former captain in McDavid. The whole thing looked even worse than it sounds, with Stecher looking like he simply forgot he is no longer an Oiler.

Here it is again from in close:

As I mentioned I felt terrible for Stecher after this all went down and it was clear that Stecher himself felt terrible, with the veteran defenseman being spotted apologizing to his goaltender after the mistake.
