Not a bad bit of work by Oilers GM Ken Holland, to be honest.

More to come on this developing story.

Read below for our report on yesterday's report on the Oilers' trades.

On Wednesday, the Edmonton Oilers acquired forwards Adam Henrique and Sam Carrick and goaltender Ty Taylor along with a 2024 seventh-round pick from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for their 2024 first-round pick and a conditional 2025 fifth-round pick. They needed the help from the Tampa Bay Lightning, who received a conditional 2025 fourth-round pick in the trade from the Oilers for retaining salary. The Ducks retained 50 per cent of both Henrique and Carrick’s cap hits, while the Lightning retained an additional 25 per cent of Henrique’s expiring deal at a $5.825 million cap hit.

Following the monster trade, Oilers general manager Ken Holland told team reporter Gene Principe of Sportsnet that he’s made room on the payroll in order to get an upgrade on the back end.

“We got Henrique at 25 cents on the dollar and Carrick at 50 cents on the dollar. Gives us cap space to do something else. I will talk to teams about a veteran defenceman.”

However, the options are dwindling on the defensive market with less than 48 hours to go until the deadline. Trades are done for defensemen Chris Tanev and Sean Walker, and the prize seems to high for Edmonton pry Noah Hanifin out of Calgary, especially as Alberta rivals.

On top of that, the Philadelphia Flyers just resigned possible trade target Nick Seeler, which is one less option for GM Holland, who also have to compete with teams like the Toronto Maple Leafs into the acquisition of an added boost on the blue line.

However, with Holland’s statement, we’ll have to keep an eye on the Oilers with the time left to the deadline and their wish to land a veteran defenseman for a long playoff run.
