The man responsible for the crash that devastated the hockey community gets some bad news
In 2018 the entire hockey community around the globe was left stunned after a terrible tragedy unfolded in the province of Saskatchewan, Canada when a man driving a semi-trailer truck blew through a stop sign and slammed his truck into a bus carrying a team of young hockey players.
The incident would leave 16 people dead and 13 more injured, sending shockwaves through the country of Canada and leaving countless families reeling as they tried to pick up the pieces of their lives.
All of the focus at the time was understanbly on the victims but there was of course a perpetrator in this case as well, with the man behind the wheel of the semi-trailer truck eventually identified as 29 year old Jaskirat Singh Sidhu. Despite the horrific loss of life Sidhu, an immigrant from India, would only be sentenced to 8 years in prison and vowed to fight deportation from the country.
It has been years since the incident but just last week we finally received an update on the case when Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada rejected Sihu's attempts to avoid deportation. Sidhu's lawyer, Michael Greene, confirmed the news in a statement last week.
"The wheels are set in motion now and the [Canada Border Services Agency] is under a legal obligation to remove people as soon as possible," said Green as per The Canadian Press.
At least one of the families that has been deeply affected by this tragedy is in favor of Sidhu losing his right to remain in the country. Chris Joseph, the father of Humboldt Broncos player Jaxon Joseph, who lost his son in the crash was very clear about his feelings on the matter.
"This would be a big chapter for us, and it’s a really important one. If we lose everything else but he gets deported that might be the only thing that gives us a little bit of peace," admitted Joseph.
"That might be the only thing that even begins my forgiveness journey, if I even have room for forgiveness."
If this is indeed the final chapter in this horrific tragedy, I do hope that it can bring the families some small measure of peace.
