Uh oh…
Bruins fans got excited on Thursday when goalie Tuukka Rask signed a professional tryout agreement with AHL Providence, getting closer to a return in Boston.
Rask, who remains an NHL free agent at the moment, has spent 14 seasons with the Bruins. He is the franchise leader in wins, but he hasn’t played in the NHL since undergoing offseason labrum surgery on his hip.
We all have a feeling that a reunion with the big club is in the works: he has been working out at the Bruins’ training facility for more than two months and has mentioned several times how he wished to return to the NHL, but most precisely to Boston, where he was the No. 2 goalie on the 2010-11 team that won the Stanley Cup.
“I feel great,” Rask said Thursday during a video conference call with reporters. “The biggest issue for me was the catching of the joint and the pain that created. So that all is gone. … I don’t have to think about it locking up on me again and creating that pain, so I feel great.”
However, it now appears that Rask was not all that honest in his comments when signing the PTO with Providence.
A Finnish media Ilta Sanomat now reports that he shared concerning about his injury as the 34-year-old admits there might be some lingering issues with his hip.
”The hip doesn’t feel like new but it allows me to play”.
Maybe fans would have felt better when he had mentioned that it will allow him to win.
Rask did say when signing the PTO that he expects to play two games in Providence before working out a contract to return to the Bruins. He doesn’t expect it to be difficult to hammer out a deal.
The Bruins have been mostly solid at goaltender this season with Linus Ullmark and Jeremy Swayman. Boston’s 75 goals allowed are the third-fewest in the league, and its 2.59 goals-against average ranks sixth. With the taxi squad option, it’s possible all three could be used in some capacity. Unless one becomes the one-man out in a trade if the Bruins pull a move to become top contender closer to the trade deadline…
The Bruins should wait and see how Rask does on the ice, seeing that his hip might remain a problem..
