A pair of National Hockey League defensemen find themselves on the waiver wire on Sunday after a pair of roster moves from just a single team.

On Sunday, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that both Lucas Carlsson and Jack Thompson were up for grabs after being placed on waivers by the Sharks. Both men have NHL experience under their belts, albeit limited experience, and both are on very affordable contracts.

Thompson, a former third round pick (93rd overall) of the Tampa Bay Lightning at the 2020 NHL Entry Draft has only appeared in 34 career NHL games. Over that stretch he has 4 goals and 6 assists for 10 points with most of Thompson's NHL experience coming as a member of the Sharks last season. During the 2024-25 season, Thompson appeared in 31 NHL games and picked up all of his NHL points, scoring 4 goals and adding 6 assists for a total of 10 points.

Carlsson on the other hand was selected in the fourth round(110th overall) of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft and has a bit more NHL experience than Thompson under his belt. Carlsson has appeared in 73 total games split between the Chicago Blackhawks, Florida Panthers and the Sharks, with 4 goals and 11 assists to his name for a career total of 15 points so far.

Both men currently have just 1 year remaining on their current deals at an average annual value and cap hit of $800,000 per season, so any team looking for affordable depth could claim either of these defensemen at very little cost.

That being said it is still very early in the season with team's still trying to sort out their rosters, so it seems more likely than not that these two will clear the waiver process. We won't have an official answer until Monday afternoon.
