Two first round picks at play in clash between Maple Leafs and Panthers.

What should be a meaningless game has a ton on the line.

If I had told you prior to the start of this season the Toronto Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers would be playing one of their most consequential games of the regular season in mid-April, you likely would have expected a game with significant playoff ramifications for both teams. Instead the Maple Leafs and Panthers will play one of their most consequential games of the season on Saturday with both teams' abilities to pick in the first round of this year's draft potentially on the line.

The Maple Leafs and Panthers have both traded away their first round pick at the 2026 National Hockey League Entry Draft but both of those trades came with conditions attached, conditions that the loser of tonight's game will have a very strong chance of meeting.

The Maple Leafs dealt their 2026 first round pick to the Boston Bruins in part of the now much maligned trade for defenseman Brandon Carlo, a trade in which the Leafs also gave up prospect Fraser Minten.

That pick is top 5 protected but despite only 78 points on the season the Maple Leafs are currently only 6th from the bottom with the Seattle Kraken, New York Rangers, Calgary Flames, Chicago Blackhawks and Vancouver Canucks all having fewer points than the Leafs. That would earn them the 6th overall pick if the season were to end today, so a loss to the Panthers to avoid accumulating more points is a must if they wish to hold on to this year's pick.

The Panthers find themselves in a similar situation with their 2026 first round pick dealt to the Chicago Blackhawks as part of the trade that brought Seth Jones to Florida. That pick is however top 10 protected and the Panthers currently also only have 78 points which would put them in line to retain their pick this year with the Panthers and Leafs currently tied for the 6th-7th worst record in the NHL this season. Two points in a win over the Leafs however would immediately see the Panthers jump up two positions in the draft, putting them in a more dangerous position as far as potentially losing their pick this year is concerned.

Interestingly enough this puts us in a scenario where neither team truly wants to win tonight, although I suspect the players on the ice may have something to say about that.
