Two NHL teams at risk of losing one of their goaltenders this week.
Training camps around the National Hockey League are starting to wind down and as a result teams around the league will have some tough decisions to make this week regarding who stays and who goes when it comes to their respective rosters. Those decisions however may be especially difficult for two NHL teams in particular.
On Monday morning, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that he believes there are two teams in the league who are very concerned about potentially losing one of their goaltenders, goaltenders who will likely have to be placed on waivers before the season begins.
"There's at least two goalies who may go on waivers this week, I'm really curious to see do they pass through? Do they get traded before hand? And those goalies are Michael DiPietro and Clay Stevenson," revealed Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast.
In the case of Michael DiPietro, the Boston Bruins signed him to a new contract all the way back in June and it was a move that seemed a little curious at the time. The Bruins gave DiPietro some term on a two-year deal, and Friedman suspects that they did so in an effort to make it more challenging for other teams to try and claim him in a situation such as this.
"I think that's one of the things they were hoping," said Friedman. "That the second year might scare some teams off."
With both Jeremy Swayman and Joonas Korpisalo on hefty contracts with term remaining on them it seems unlikely that DiPietro can avoid waivers and after an outstanding season in the American Hockey League where he had a 2.05 goals against average and a .927 save percentage, it seems likely that he would be claimed if he was indeed placed on waivers.
Clay Stevenson on the other hand isn't coming off nearly as strong a season as DiPietro with Stevenson recording a 2.94 goals against average and a .888 save percentage over 33 games in the AHL last season, but Friedman believes there are teams out there with their eyes on the goaltender.
"I'll say this, when Clay Stevenson signed with Washington out of college, another team that really liked him were the Rangers," revealed Friedman. "The Rangers were disappointed that he didn't sign there. I think Washington knows that it's gonna be hard to sneak him through."
The Capitals goaltending situation is similar to that of the Bruins with both Logan Thompson and Charlie Lindgren fairly well established in their roles as starter and backup respectively. It seems inevitable that Stevenson will be waived and, like the Bruins, there seems to be some concern around how that may turn out.
"I could see the Bruins and the Capitals in particular being a little nervous about these two guys," said Friedman.
Of course one, or both, of these teams could elect to make a trade that either moves one of the goalies already mentioned here or even frees up cap space to allow them to keep 3 goalies on their NHL roster. The only thing that is certain is that we won't have to wait long to find out how all of this will play out.
