The Minnesota Wild got into the game of helping rival teams out in monster trades, absorbing some caps and loading up on picks. A week ago, the Wild retained some salary to get Ryan O’Reilly to the Toronto Maple Leafs, and in return, received a 2025 fourth-round pick. Just yesterday, in a trade that sent defenseman Dmitry Orlov and forward Garnet Hathaway to the Boston Bruins, the Wild retained 25 percent of Orlov’s salary after the Washington Capitals retained 50 percent in the first move of the deal. Exactly the same numbers as the O’Reilly trade. Minnesota got a 2023 fifth-round pick in return.

Other teams want play the Wild’s part. According to insider Frank Seravalli, the Montreal Canadiens and Vancouver Canucks have informed teams that they have recently told GMs they are willing to act as third-party brokers.

Fans are aware that the Arizona Coyotes, Chicago Blackhawks and Anaheim Ducks are willing and able to play that role, but now the Habs and Canucks want in too.

With top contenders being so cap-strapped ahead of deadline day, this new information will surely push them to play big on the market. Which means significant trades to report.

With just a week to go, things will get way more interesting on the trade market!
