A stunning report from NHL insider Pierre LeBrun has sparked growing discussion around the long-term outlook of two of the league’s biggest stars.

According to LeBrun, both Auston Matthews and Connor McDavid have yet to fully commit to their plans beyond the 2026–27 season, despite being under contract through 2027–28.

While neither player is expected to move in the immediate future, the uncertainty comes at a time when both organizations are undergoing significant internal evaluation.

In Toronto, Matthews remains signed to a four-year, $53 million extension carrying a $13.25 million cap hit. However, with the Maple Leafs entering an offseason of change, including a search for a new head coach and questions about roster direction, the franchise is now working to re-establish long-term stability around its captain.

In Edmonton, McDavid is operating under a team-friendly $12.5 million cap hit following his short-term extension. The Oilers are also navigating organizational transition, with changes behind the bench and ongoing questions about how the roster will evolve around its generational centerpiece.

LeBrun noted that both players are effectively in a “wait-and-see” position, observing how their respective teams respond this offseason before making any firm long-term decisions.

The situation has drawn comparisons to recent high-profile cases around the league, most notably the Dylan Larkin situation in Detroit, where prolonged team uncertainty and internal tension ultimately led to a major shift in direction.

Larkin, long viewed as the face of the Red Wings franchise, recently became the center of trade speculation after reports indicated growing frustration with the team’s inability to return to playoff contention and internal organizational strain.

While there is no public indication either Matthews or McDavid are approaching a similar breaking point, the parallel is being noted around the league as teams enter a critical phase of roster building.

Because both stars are eligible to negotiate extensions beginning in 2027, the next two seasons may ultimately determine how their long-term futures unfold.

For now, the message is simple: nothing is decided yet, but everything is being watched closely.
